We are celebrating the beginning of summer and our 2nd year of Club Curiosity with a fun party at the Garland Central Library! From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. the library will have  games, crafts, prizes, and more for families with children of all ages to enjoy! Volunteers for this event will be assigned to various duties, including:

ATTENTION: Starting on Monday, March 23, volunteering on the Reader Stairs will be limited to 3 hours per day. The rules written below are still in effect. 

Central Library is looking for teen volunteers to model proper usage of our new Reader Stairs. To discourage people (especially children) from climbing or jumping on the Reader Stairs, volunteers can find a seat on the stairs while reading a book, working on school assignments, or other quiet activities of your choosing. Snacks and covered drinks are allowed, but meals must be eaten in the upstairs lobby. Here's how it works:

Volunteers are welcome to sign up in groups to sit together on the stairs, as long as they keep their volume at a reasonable level. Music or audio from phones must be played on headphones/earbuds.

This volunteer opportunity is for ages 12-18 only during Central Library's operating hours. Volunteers will sign in for their shift downstairs at the Children's Desk. UPDATE: Volunteers must sign out at least 30 minutes before closing.

Join us for another exciting summer with Club Curiosity! Every week in June, Garland Libraries will host performers for entertaining family events! Central Library will present the following events:

Volunteers will arrive at 2:00 p.m. to help with any final set-up tasks. During the event, you'll help with counting attendance and crowd management. After the event, we will clean up, tear down the room as necessary, and assist the performers with gathering their equipment.

Teens ages 12-18 can earn community service hours by volunteering at the library's World Cup Bracelets program. Soccer lovers of all ages will design and create bracelets and other custom beaded accessories in their favorite team's colors.

Volunteers will report to the Children's Reference Desk.

Come help us at Play & Learn, where families with children ages 0 to 5 join us in the Central Library Storytime Room to enjoy an assortment of toys, games, and activities that foster imagination, creativity and problem solving.

Volunteers will sign in at 10 am and help count attendance during the program, which runs 10 a.m. to noon. At noon, we will close the storytime room, and volunteers will help clean the toys and put them away.

Join us this summer for LEGO Lab, where kids can be creative with a collection of bricks, gears and minifigures. Volunteers will help with setting up the supplies before the program, counting attendance during the event, and cleaning up after the event is done.

Teens ages 12-18 can earn community service hours by volunteering at the library's STEAM Lab.  This month children ages 6-12 will make coloring changing slime.  We will have two sessions: 2:30 & 3:30 pm. 

Volunteers will report to the Children's Reference Desk. 

Join us at this fun art program for children 1-5, where little ones will get messy with their creativity! Volunteers will help with setting up the supplies before the program, counting attendance during the event, and cleaning up after the event is done.

Join us this summer for the ChompSaw Challenge, where families will work together with a kid-safe power tool to create 3D dinosaur puzzles from cardboard. Families can experience hands-on science with the Perot Museum's TECH Truck. Volunteers will be assigned an activity station before the program starts, then will help participants during the event. After the event is over, you'll help clean up and put away supplies.

West Garland Library
Weekday Afternoons | School Year

The Garland Public Library is seeking dependable adult volunteers to support our after-school program for tweens and teens. This program provides a safe, welcoming place where youth can complete homework, participate in activities, and connect with positive adult role models.

If you enjoy working with middle and high school students and can provide calm, consistent support, we’d love to hear from you.

Support and supervise youth alongside library staff

Assist with games, crafts, and activities

Offer light homework encouragement (not formal tutoring)

Model respectful behavior and positive communication

Help with setup, cleanup, and snack distribution

Report any concerns directly to staff

Volunteers do not independently supervise minors and always work under staff direction.

Age 18+

Patient, dependable, and comfortable with teens

Strong communicator with a positive presence

Able to commit consistently during the school year

Experience in education, youth programs, or libraries is helpful but not required.

Weekday afternoon availability required

Garland Public Library is seeking skilled and community-minded adults to serve as Makerspace Volunteers. If you enjoy working with creative tools and technology — and love helping others learn — this is a meaningful way to give back.

Makerspace Volunteers work alongside library staff to support patrons using innovative equipment and creative tools in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

This is a hands-on role ideal for adults who want to share their expertise while supporting community access to technology and creative expression.

Assist patrons with the safe and appropriate use of makerspace equipment

Provide basic instruction, demonstrations, and troubleshooting within your area of expertise

Support staff during open makerspace hours, workshops, and special programs

Help maintain cleanliness and organization of the makerspace

Promote a positive and respectful environment for all ages

Refer complex issues or policy questions to library staff

Volunteers do not supervise independently and work under the direction of library staff at all times.

Volunteers should demonstrate experience in at least one of the following areas:

Computers, software, and printing

Sewing and embroidery machines

3D printing (setup and basic troubleshooting)

Laser cutting/engraving

Cricut or vinyl cutting machines

Fiber arts (knitting, crochet, embroidery)

Garland Public Libraries are expanding our volunteer program and seeking adult volunteers interested in supporting library services across the city.

Historically, the library’s volunteer program has focused on youth participation. Due to the program’s success and the growing need for support, we are now building a pool of adult volunteers who can be contacted as new opportunities become available.

This is not a single-position commitment. Instead, selected volunteers will be part of an interest pool and may choose to participate in opportunities that match their availability and interests. This flexible structure allows volunteers to serve without the pressure of a fixed schedule or long-term obligation.
